Brian Corvino ’02

Vice president of operations, PharmaStrat

“The Moravian ecosystem of learning provided me with a foundation for the future.”

When he started at Moravian, Brian Corvino ’02 decided to take advantage of every opportunity the College had to offer. In addition to his job as vice president of operations for PharmaStrat, a consulting firm to biopharmaceutical and medical device companies, Corvino is now an unabashed cheerleader for his alma mater.

“The Moravian ecosystem of learning—dedicated and passionate teachers, an engaged student learning community, and a nurturing environment to pursue a multidisciplinary liberal arts education—provided me with a foundation for the future,” says Corvino, a Moravian Emerging Leader Award recipient, College Trustee, and Alumni Board of Directors president. “I apply the principles of virtually every discipline in a liberal arts education on a daily basis.”

Thanks to some help from his Sigma Phi Epsilon (Corvino was chapter president) mentor, Phil Patrick, Corvino did an internship at PharmaStrat, where he and Patrick are now partners. Several study abroad experiences in Europe ignited his passion for travel; the student who had never left the continental United States now has visited four continents. The Honors program not only provided closure on his undergrad years, but helped launch his future.

“The Honors program is the single most transformational educational experience one can have,” says Corvino, a double major in political science and economics who earned an MBA from University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton Business School. “It allowed me to pursue my passion for studying global health and truly linked all the areas of my liberal arts education.”

The Moravian community holds deep meaning for Corvino, and he counts his college friends as members of his extended family. He met his wife, Jaime Marks Corvino ’04, also a member of the Alumni Board of Directors, on campus, and briefly attended with his sister, Lindsay Corvino ’05.

Even Brian’s mother, Bonnie, can be considered an honorary ’hound. “I’m convinced my mother is one of the more active members of the Moravian alumni community, even though she never attended.”

2009 Summer Retreat

A successful SigEp chapter requires effective guidance from those who can both relate issues of the chapter and can use their experience and maturity to advise the operations of the undergraduates.  It is my pleasure to introduce the new chapter counselor for Pennsylvania Beta Alpha’s chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, Mr. Trever Sweeney.

Trever is a 2011 graduate of Moravian College with a degree in Financial Economics.  Trever joined Moravian’s SigEp chapter in Spring 2007 and served as both Vice President of Finance and President, as well as multiple committee roles.  Trever participated heavily in the leadership continuum, being selected to facilitate multiple EDGE and Carlson Leadership Academies, as well as attending Ruck Leadership Institute in 2009.  As an undergraduate at Beta Alpha chapter, he was instrumental in the creation of the annual golf outing, the alumni mentoring program, and the development of standards and the standards board.  Trever has been recognized at both the local and national levels receiving the Consummate Gentleman and Fearless Leader Awards from Beta Alpha’s AVC, and the Frank J. Ruck Leadership Award for District 6 his senior year.

Outside of Moravian, Trever is soon finishing up his contract with the Marine Corps Reserves, for whom he served in Iraq in 2008 and Morocco in 2011.  In the summer of 2010, he had an internship at Highline Financial in New York City and is pursuing a Masters Degree in Analytical Finance degree this fall.

On a personal note, I have enjoyed the privilege of serving Moravian PA BA, as Chapter Counselor, since 2007.  I have learned a tremendous amount from all of the men in the chapter, and have grown immensely as a result.  I have a tremendous sense of pride in working closely with Trever since he joined the chapter in the Spring of 2007 and attended the Carlson Leadership Academy in just his first semester with the Chapter.  Since that time, Trever has served as a consistent leader and role model for the men of PA BA, the Moravian community and broader global community.  I am confident that the men of PA BA will benefit greatly from Trever’s leadership in this role.  Please join me in welcoming Trever to this new service leadership position!

Gary Zack, pictured at right, won the javelin throw with his first toss of the meet, a Moravian school record toss of 67.36 meters (221 feet). Zack had the longest throw in the nation by two feet, one inch over Lars Tenglin from North Park University, who entered the meet with the top distance in the nation, and Zack earned All-America honors for the first time in his career. Zack competed in the second flight of the preliminaries and actually fouled on his second and third attempts. In the finals, Zack had throws of 60.43, 60.50 and 59.13 meters.

Sophomore Tyler Potterton picture at left, competed in the javelin as well, placing 14th of 18 competitors with a toss of 57.23 meters (187 feet, nine inches) on his first of three throws in the first preliminary flight. Potterton’s other throws were distances of 53.66 and 56.49 meters.

Both Zack and Potterton hold positions within SigEp at Moravian College. Gary is the chaplain and Tyler holds a position on the standards board.

Facchiano was selected as one of the top 120 undergraduate members in the country from a pool of over 15,000. The Ruck Leadership Institute focuses on the leadership principles espoused in one of the best-selling leadership books of all time, The Leadership Challenge, co-written by Barry Posner, a nationally renowned leadership expert and SigEp alumnus. The program is one of the ways SigEp lives up to its mission: “Building Balanced Men.”

Facchiano said he was not sure what to expect at this gathering of so many fellow SigEps from across the country. “We got into teams right away and had to figure out how to work together with a lot of unknowns,” he said. Facchiano, who studies financial economics, serves as his chapter’s president, and is a thrower on the track team at Moravian. “My courses at Moravian give me the technical knowledge I need in business, but this leadership training has shown me how much I have to work on myself to get results from others,” he added.

Brain Warren, executive director of the Fraternity, said, “I am confident that these students will go back to their campuses ready to take on leadership roles with new skills and determination, as I did when I completed the program in 2002. The opportunity to learn from the most talented and highly accomplished leaders in our Fraternity gives these young men a distinct advantage as they embark on their careers.”

The Ruck Leadership Institute is named in honor of Frank J. Ruck Jr., a former Grand President of SigEp and a visionary in developing leaders. He was an inspiration for many generations of SigEp members to reach their full potential as leaders in all aspects of their lives.

Sigma Phi Epsilon, established in 1901, is one of the nation’s largest fraternities, with over 15,000 undergraduates on 240 campuses across the United States. Its mission is “Building Balanced Men”, which is achieved through a four-year member development program that has contributed to a fraternity-wide GPA of over 3.0, a focus on the principles of Sound Mind and Sound Body, and service learning efforts that allow members to develop leadership skills while giving back to the community.
