Each issue of InCommon tells the story of a Moravian alum or student who is “living the Moravian Promise.” Moravian College promises to partner with students to build a strong foundation for their personal and professional future. Moravian challenges students with: 1) a strong, personalized academic major; 2) hands-on learning opportunities; and 3) an environment that promotes the development of a deeper enjoyment of life.

Brian Corvino ’02

Vice president of operations, PharmaStrat

“The Moravian ecosystem of learning provided me with a foundation for the future.”

When he started at Moravian, Brian Corvino ’02 decided to take advantage of every opportunity the College had to offer. In addition to his job as vice president of operations for PharmaStrat, a consulting firm to biopharmaceutical and medical device companies, Corvino is now an unabashed cheerleader for his alma mater.

“The Moravian ecosystem of learning—dedicated and passionate teachers, an engaged student learning community, and a nurturing environment to pursue a multidisciplinary liberal arts education—provided me with a foundation for the future,” says Corvino, a Moravian Emerging Leader Award recipient, College Trustee, and Alumni Board of Directors president. “I apply the principles of virtually every discipline in a liberal arts education on a daily basis.”

Thanks to some help from his Sigma Phi Epsilon (Corvino was chapter president) mentor, Phil Patrick, Corvino did an internship at PharmaStrat, where he and Patrick are now partners. Several study abroad experiences in Europe ignited his passion for travel; the student who had never left the continental United States now has visited four continents. The Honors program not only provided closure on his undergrad years, but helped launch his future.

“The Honors program is the single most transformational educational experience one can have,” says Corvino, a double major in political science and economics who earned an MBA from University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton Business School. “It allowed me to pursue my passion for studying global health and truly linked all the areas of my liberal arts education.”

The Moravian community holds deep meaning for Corvino, and he counts his college friends as members of his extended family. He met his wife, Jaime Marks Corvino ’04, also a member of the Alumni Board of Directors, on campus, and briefly attended with his sister, Lindsay Corvino ’05.

Even Brian’s mother, Bonnie, can be considered an honorary ’hound. “I’m convinced my mother is one of the more active members of the Moravian alumni community, even though she never attended.”

A couple of months ago, the AVC sent out an email to our alumni asking if anyone would be interested in serving as Brother-Mentor to our undergraduate brothers. I was quite pleased with our alumni response and I hope that many of you would consider participating in the program too. Fifteen undergraduate brothers have expressed interest in speaking with a fellow alumnus to discuss the various career paths they can persue and the job/internship opportunities your company may offer. The list of brothers is grouped by graduating class below:

Anthony Falco-Biology-Senior
Andrew Grando-Biology-Senior
Kyle Krupa-Psycology & Businesss Management-Senior

Dan Belowitch-Accounting-Junior
Shawn Kaspurn-Economics-Junior
Trever Sweeney-Financial Economics & Math-Junior
Dan Cancieliorre-Business Management-Junior
Chris Kalis-Business Management-Junior
Chris Zechman-Biology-Junior
TJ Festa-Accounting-Junior
Ryan Ulk-Accounting-Junior
Seamus Dubuss-Financial Economics-Junior

Michael Facchiano-Financial Economics-Sophomore
Nicco Dalpiaz-Business Management-Sophomore
Nelson Knudson-Biochemistry-Sophomore

Seamuss Dubuss, the undergraduate Brother-Mentor coordinator, has put together an extensive profile sheet (sample attached to this email) for each of the brothers listed above. Once an alumnus has expressed interest in mentoring one of the above mentioned brothers, you will be given their respective profile sheet to help foster your discussion. All that is required from you is a single phone call! Please respond back to me (szientek@gmail.com) if you are interested in mentoring and which of the brothers above you would be interested in speaking with. Thank you for your help!!

Eighty-Five brothers, dates, family, friends, and also Balanced Man Scholarship finalists and their parents came together on October 3rd, 2009 for the 10th Annual Leadership Banquet. The purpose of this gathering is to celebrate the hard work that has taken place since the beginning, while also taking time to award our annual Balanced Man Scholarship to one freshman male who exemplifies the principles of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. Click the Read More link for a full recap of the event, including presentations and award winners and be sure to check out the photos from the event.

After the cocktail hour gave alums and undergrads a chance to mingle and reminisce, the group moved into the presentation hall for speeches. Phil Patrick gave a great presentation (click here to view it) of the overall aspects and ideals while also giving a great explanation of the Leadership Continuum, which turned out to be a great tool for the Balanced Men and their families to get an understanding of what Sigma Phi Epsilon is really all about.

After Phil’s presentation, we were able to take a blast in the past to look back at the last 10 years with a presentation by Brian Corvino. Brian was able to show us how Sigma Phi Epsilon came about on our campus along with pointing out the hard work that the founding fathers and every year after put in to make us, what we are today.

One of the special parts of the night was, when everyone was able to listen to three of our own Alumni Brothers and how Sigep has changed their life for the better and shaped them into the person that they are today. It was really a feel good story in each one of their cases and it showed how making a choice to join a brotherhood could turn out to be one of if not their best decision in life. After the speeches from the alumni, it was now time for the recipients of this year’s Alumni and Undergrad Awards.

The following outstanding brothers received awards as follows:

Consummate Gentleman: Trever Sweeney
Powerhouse Athlete: Andrew Grando
Highest GPA: Christopher Kalis (3.75)
Fearless Leader: Kyle Krupa
Red Door: Anthony Falco
Service Above Self: Daniel Belowich

The $1,000 Balanced Man Scholarship was awarded to Evan Lick from Haddonfield, NJ.

Congrats everyone and thanks for another fantastic event!
